Dental health is important to kids’ wellbeing. That’s why the Government of Australia enacted a benefits schedule to ensure access to dental care for kids of all ages.

What Is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) 2018 was started in January of 2014. This plan helps some 3 million children across the country access the basic dental services they need to stay healthy.

These benefits amount to $1,000 in dental services and can be accessed in both public and private dental clinics. This is a good alternative for insurance cover for kids whose families don’t already have a plan in place and may not be able to afford treatment costs upfront.

Protect Your Kids’ Dental Health

If your family qualifies for the CDBS, then you should make the most of the benefits.

Baby teeth are important and need regular dental care. Only if your child’s smile is healthy can they eat comfortably and smile with confidence. Trips to the dentist can help keep your child’s teeth in good shape and the CDBS may be your key to accessing the care your family needs.

Dental Benefits for Kids

Let’s take a moment to review the services covered by the CDBS.

Your child’s dental benefits under CDBS may include:

  • Dental exams
  • X-rays
  • Teeth cleanings
  • Sealants
  • Root canals
  • Tooth extractions
  • Dental fillings

Note, however, that “extra” procedures like braces or teeth whitening aren’t covered by the CDBS.

After confirming that you qualify for the CDBS, it’s up to you to decide how to use the benefits. You might have to spend all $1,000 at once if your child needs a lot of treatment. Otherwise, you can choose to spread the benefits out over the course of the two-year period to cover routine checkups and dental cleanings.

If your benefits aren’t quite sufficient to cover the needed treatment, then you’ll discuss other treatment and payment options with the dentist at the initial appointment.

Is Your Family Eligible for the Benefits?

CDBS services are available to kids aged 2 to 17 who also qualify for Medicare. In addition, they need to be receiving another benefit such as:

● Family Tax Benefit Part A
● Youth Allowance
● Disability Support Pension
● Parenting Payment
● Carer Payment

If you’re receiving Medicare, call for more information to find out if you qualify. Even if your child is technically eligible for only part of a year they may still be able to use the CDBS benefits for the rest of the year.
